Environmental Monitoring Station for Mars Science Laboratory
نویسنده
چکیده
The Viking Landers measured pressure, wind speed and direction, and air temperature with a small boom [1]. Mars Pathfinder had the Atmospheric Structure Instrument on its lander and recorded pressure, air temperature and wind direction [2]. MSL has environment sensors within its payload as well: it is the REMS (Rover Environmental Monitoring Station) instrument, which is in charge of recording pressure, humidity, air and ground temperature, wind speed and direction and UV radiation at the rover level. A difference with other missions is that MSL is a rover and, therefore, the instrument is part of a complex mechanical architecture that entails many design constraints that have been implemented on the REMS design. This work describes the instrument and operation, emphasizing the problems found in the development phase and the potential impact on science.

Mimicking Mars: a vacuum simulation chamber for testing environmental instrumentation for Mars exploration.
We have built a Mars environmental simulation chamber, designed to test new electromechanical devices and instruments that could be used in space missions. We have developed this environmental system aiming at validating the meteorological station Rover Environment Monitoring Station of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission currently installed on Curiosity rover. The vacuum chamber has been bu...
متن کاملThe Rover Environmental Monitoring Station Ground Temperature Sensor: A Pyrometer for Measuring Ground Temperature on Mars
We describe the parameters that drive the design and modeling of the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) Ground Temperature Sensor (GTS), an instrument aboard NASA's Mars Science Laboratory, and report preliminary test results. REMS GTS is a lightweight, low-power, and low cost pyrometer for measuring the Martian surface kinematic temperature. The sensor's main feature is its innovati...
متن کاملPower law distribution of pressure drops in dust devils Observation techniques and Earth–Mars comparison
Data from the Pathfinder and Phoenix landers on Mars show transient pressure drops ( 1–4 per day) attributed to nearby encounters with dust devils or dust-free vortices. The distribution of pressure drop amplitudes is consistent with a truncated power law distribution with a slope of 2, similar to that suggested previously for the optical diameters of dust devils. Comparable data from terrestri...
متن کاملThe PROCESS experiment: amino and carboxylic acids under Mars-like surface UV radiation conditions in low-earth orbit.
The search for organic molecules at the surface of Mars is a top priority of the next Mars exploration space missions: Mars Science Laboratory (NASA) and ExoMars (ESA). The detection of organic matter could provide information about the presence of a prebiotic chemistry or even biological activity on this planet. Therefore, a key step in interpretation of future data collected by these missions...
متن کاملDesign and Evaluation of Complex Habitable Environments
An exploration with two main goals is presented: 1. Modeling a self-contained "intelligent building," the Mars Arctic Research Station (MARS) habitation unit, and interaction with its users. The modeling effort seeks representation of invisible aspects of the interactions between the station and its users rather than visible forms. 2. Examination of how (or if) the modeling process contributes ...
